When Do I Need a Dental Extraction?
Dental extractions are necessary for various reasons, but as soon as you notice something wrong or painful in your mouth, you should schedule an appointment with our team. We’ll give you a complete examination and discover where the pain stems from and what the treatment could look like. All of the following can lead to us needing to extract your teeth and develop a restoration plan:
- Cavities or severe tooth decay
- Fractured teeth
- Impacted teeth
- Crowded teeth
- Severe gum disease
- Other dental injuries
Post Dental Extraction Care
Once we have successfully removed the tooth, we use gauze over the affected area and have you close your mouth to put gentle pressure on the bandage. This helps form blood clots so the site can heal better. It also helps prevent the risk of dry sockets forming, which can be painful. After the bleeding has slowed, you can remove the gauze. Don’t be concerned if you still see or taste some light bleeding, as this is normal. We suggest you stick to fluids or soft foods for the first 24 hours after the surgery to minimize opening the extraction site up. You will also want to ice the outside of the jaw for pain relief, although we can also prescribe a pain medication. If you have any issues after leaving, please do not hesitate to call. We’re available 24/7 for emergency services.
